The Montañas Vacías Bikepacking Challenge is an extraordinary 224-kilometer journey with 4,500 meters of positive elevation. Inspired by Ernesto Pastor’s Winter Loop, this route invites gravel enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the breathtaking landscapes of the Castellón region, from serene vias verdes to rugged mountain passes.
Starting in Barracas and ending in the picturesque town of Montanejos, this three-stage adventure is a test of endurance, skill, and the sheer love of bikepacking.
THE ROUTE
Stage 1: Barracas to Azuebar
• Distance: 102 km
• Elevation Gain: 1,260 m
Your journey begins in Barracas, following the Via Verde de Ojos Negros, a tranquil route that guides you through rolling countryside and peaceful farmland. As you leave the flatlands behind, you’ll enter the rugged terrain of Sierra Calderona, with its characteristic red rocks and aromatic pine forests. The day ends as you cross into the Sierra de Espadán, renowned for its lush cork oak forests and dramatic peaks, arriving in the charming village of Azuebar for an overnight stay.
Stage 2 : Azuebar to Torrechiva
• Distance: 56 km
• Elevation Gain: 1,630 m
This stage begins with a challenging ascent through the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, where the terrain becomes more technical and rewarding. You’ll traverse winding trails surrounded by untouched nature, punctuated by panoramic views of jagged peaks and deep valleys. Passing through ancient villages steeped in history, the day culminates in Torrechiva, a quiet hamlet nestled amid rolling hills and sparkling streams—an idyllic spot to rest and recharge.
Stage 3 : Torrechiva to Montanejos
• Distance: 52.5 km
• Elevation Gain: 1,380 m
The final stretch takes you through a tapestry of pine-scented forests and rocky landscapes, following undulating trails that test your endurance. The highlight of this stage is the descent into the enchanting spa town of Montanejos, famous for its natural thermal springs and dramatic limestone cliffs.
